Trade Justice Movement

On 19th June 2002 the Trade Justice Movement organised a mass lobby of Parliament to draw attention to the plight of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world, who are disadvantaged by unfair trade rules. The Conservative Party mounted a debate which you can read in full on the Parliament website. Below is the text of the opening speech by Shadow International Development Secretary Caroline Spelman MP, the reply by Secretary of State Clare Short MP and the wind-up by Shadow Trade Minister Robert Key MP.

Before the debate started Rob Key met the delegation from Salisbury outside the church of St.Margaret, Westminster. Last month he attended a conference in Salisbury on Trade Justice and received pledge cards which he presented to Conservative Leader Iain Duncan Smith - who replied to the group, confirming Conservative Party concern about the need for fair trade.
