Railway Station Parking Chaos
“The
left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is up
to” – MP
One of
Salisbury’s
infamous traffic problems is back in the sights of Salisbury
MP Robert Key.
Chalke Valley residents
asked Rob to take up the issue following a letter they had
from Wiltshire County Council which left
them “enraged” and “astonished”.
A Wiltshire County
Council official told the Chalke Valley Preservation Society
that providing more car parking at railway
stations was “questionable” since it encouraged
long-distance commuting and increased housing pressures in
rural areas. He said a central part of the Salisbury Transport
Plan is to reduce city centre car parking to lower traffic
levels and congestion.
Robert Key said, “That
is not what we were told when the Council trumpeted more
on-street parking earlier this year.
When I challenged District Councillors on this they denied
any knowledge of such a policy.”
“South West Trains wants more parking for their customers.
The Government wants us to travel by train, not car. A tiny
handful of people in our villages may be commuters to London – but
try asking someone trying to park at Salisbury Station before
their train goes, if they think they are causing congestion
in the City centre – and you’ll rightly get a dusty
answer.”
“I am now
waiting for answers. Those responsible must get their act
together. This farce has run long enough.” |
