DAVID CAMERON: A NEW DIRECTION
Robert Key says...
Our Party Conference at Bournemouth
was the most optimistic for years. Talking to representatives
from all over the UK, it was quite clear that most were ready and
willing to set off in a new direction - in order to win the next General
Election. All the main speeches were of a very high standard and very
substantial, too. Substance is not the same as detailed policy. As
George Osborn said, it would be folly to write the 2009 Budget now.
Since returning from Bournemouth I have received
almost universally solid support for David Cameron from our
local Conservatives. That is an excellent start to the Parliamentary
session that starts on Monday 9th October.
In his first full speech
to the Conservative Party Conference, David Cameron has emphasised
the following:
- Tony Blair
explained his priorities in three words: education, education,
education. I can do it in three letters. NHS.
- Families
are not just the basic unit of society, they are the best.
We will set a basic test for all our policies: does it
help the family?
- We
will not take risks with the economy. We will not make promises
we can’t keep. We believe in sound money and stability always
comes first.
- We will encourage faith schools
to take social responsibility for community cohesion by admitting
a proportion of pupils from other faiths.
- Social
responsibility means a Britain where instead of always turning
to the state for the answer, we turn to each other and ask:
what more can we do together to solve this problem? · We
must face up to the fact that progress towards our nation’s
priorities is never free. There’s always a price to be paid.
We must show that we understand the price of progress, and
tell people what it is. Not after we get into government, but before.
