Dear Mr. Key,

Wylye Valley Traffic Management Study

I can now respond to your letter of 17th February, 2005, concerning a pedestrian crossing for South Newton.

As you will be aware, the A36 is a Trunk Road and road safety remains the responsibility of the Highways Agency. However, due to the uncertainty of progressing a major scheme for the Wylye Valley, the County Council commissioned its consultants to develop traffic management measures to improve environmental conditions in the three villages straddling the A36.

Following a comprehensive study and consultation with residents and others, our consultants are currently finalising the report detailing proposals for South Newton, Stapleford and Stoford. I can advise that the provision of a formal pedestrian crossing for South Newton is being recommended. Further work needs to be undertaken to establish the type of crossing facility to provide the safest option for pedestrians crossing the A36.

It is anticipated that the necessary funding will be available to enable the measures proposed in the report to be implemented in 2005/06.

Yours sincerely,

G.C. Batten
