Dear Mr. Key,

Roadworks - A36 Wellow

I am writing to advise you that on to 17th January the Highways Agency are intending to carry out works on the A36 at Wellow between Canada Common and the Fighting Cocks which will necessitate the road being closed for approximately 6 weeks. To this end, representatives from this Authority, Hampshire County Council, Wiltshire and Hampshire Police and the Highways Agencies have met to discuss the alternative routes for diverted traffic and to consider what traffic management measures that could be put in place to ease the traffic flow and at the same time cause the least disruption to surrounding villages.

It was agreed that the diversion for southbound traffic would be along the A27 at Brickworth junction to the A3090 at Romsey. For northbound traffic it will be the M27/A31 and then the A338 north into Wiltshire.

Temporary weight restrictions will be imposed on the:

  • B3078 from Brook in Hampshire, to the B3080 in Downton at its junction with the A338.
  • B3079 from Brook in Hampshire, to its junction with the A36 at the Landford Poacher.
  • New Road Landford, from its junction with the A36 to its junction with the B3079.
  • Glebe Lane Landford, from its junction with the A36 to its junction with the B3079.
  • Common Road Whiteparish, from its junction with the A27 to its junction with the A36.

These temporary weight restrictions in Wiltshire and Hampshire will prevent an increase in HGV movements except for those vehicles with legitimate access. The possibility of a temporary weight restriction in Hampshire on the south-eastern end of the A27 in Hampshire was discussed at some length and it was concluded by both Hampshire County Council and the Police that because of the industrial sites and some landfill sites located off of the A27 in Hampshire, it would be not be possible to impose a weight restriction and successfully enforce it. Therefore, the junction of the A27/A3090 will be signed with diversion signs directing traffic towards the M27. In addition to the diversion signs, 'LONG DELAYS AHEAD' signs will also be provided to deter traffic from using it.

The network of signs advising of the roadworks in Wellow will be placed as far as the A303/A36 junction at Wylye, the A34 at Bullington Cross and M4 eastbound in advance of junction 18 (A46/A36). Additional signing will also be provided at the M27 westbound between junction 4 and 5 and the A360 between Airmans Corner and Longbarrow roundabout to discourage traffic from gojng through Salisbury and to use the A303 and A34.

I hope that this information is of assistance to you, but should you wish to discuss the works further or the traffic management measures that are being put in place, you might like to contact the Senior Engineer Mr. Keith.
