LONDON SW1 Dear Robert,
Parking
at Salisbury Railway Station
I enclose
a copy of the letter sent on behalf of the Chalke Valley
Preservation Society
commenting on Wiltshire County
Council's Local Transport Plan and the reply from the County
Council.
The Committee
of the CVPS is enraged at the response and astonished that
a policy is being followed by Salisbury
District Council,
backed by Wiltshire County Council, which is totally
contrary to the government policy of encouraging travellers
to use
trains rather than their cars,
Because
of the lack of parking at the railway station it is not possible
to travel
by train after 8.30 am to
Bath,
Southampton,
London or Exeter all of which have an excellent service
from Salisbury. It is completely unrealistic to suggest
that travellers
will make a complicated trip using several buses or
pay for a taxi. Furthermore there is no point is buying a
senior rail card as travellers are only allowed to
use
off peak
services
after 9 am, removing cheaper travel from those who
would benefit.
I hope
that you can take up this issue and put pressure on Salisbury
District Council to allow the new
car
park for
which Rail Track sought planning permission. Perhaps
one answer would
be a temporary permission for a car park, accessed
from Fisherton Street, until the new station is built
at Wilton.
Yours sincerely

Priscilla
