Department for
Transport

HOUSE OF COMMONS
WRITTEN PARLIAMENTARY QUESTION

For answer on : Monday 28 June 2004

Date answered : Monday 5 July 2004

Mr Robert Key (Salisbury) Party: CON

543 To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, if he will close with immediate effect, on safety grouds, the A344 at its junction with the A303(T) at Stonehenge.
[181255]

Mr Jamieson

The Highways Agency has responsibility for the A303(T) road and has no plans to close this junction. Traffic management at the junction is constantly under review and recent improvements have been made. All traffic entering the trunk road from the A344 can now only turn left - avoiding a turn across fast moving traffic. The A344 is the responsibility of Wiltshire County Council and any closure in relation to this road would have to be undertaken by them.

The construction of the A303 Stonehenge improvement will remove the junction of the A344 and the A303. Subject to the outcome of statutory procedures and the availability of funds construction of this scheme could start in the Spring of 2005.
