Dear George
Road Safety
I have recently spoken to one of your excellent Road safety
Officers who suggested that the
problem in question is so serious that I should write to you
direct.
One of the most dangerous black in spots in South Wiltshire
is on the A3094 where the
Netherhampton Straight meets Park Wall at grid reference 103300.
This right angle bend in the main road, is sadly, a favourite
sight for suicide attempts as well as serious accidents.
The residents of Southbank Cottages have regular brushes with
death and injury. Tragically, some years ago, a child from the
cottages was run over and killed by a school bus coming down
the hill from the racecourse. The folk-memory is potent.
I enclose a letter from Mrs Catherine Herve [address deletedi
She describes the situation in language which is not over dramatic.
Mrs Herve also suggests solutions. I can see that it has a
lot of merits. However, even if we were to persuade Wilton Estate
to part with the necessary land I can see it would be a complex
legal issue beeause three of the houses in question are owned
by the Council and three are owner occupied.
In any event, I believe this dangerous situation needs expert
assessment. Please would you do that? I imagine you will need
to consult with the Police as well as with your Traffic Engineers.
I have been to the site on many occasions over the past decade
and it is indeed a frightening experience to stand by the road
anywhere in this vicinity.
I would be grateful for your expert advice.
Yours ever,
