Biography

Rob was born in Plymouth in 1945 and moved to Salisbury in 1947
when his father became Bishop of Sherborne. His mother was a
Headmistress and a Magistrate. Rob went to school at Leadenhall,
Salisbury Cathedral School and Sherborne, then on to Clare College,
Cambridge. For sixteen years he taught economics, first at Loretto
School, Edinburgh and then at Harrow School.
Rob and Sue were married in 1968. Sue is a Scot, a science graduate
and a former teacher. Their son, an investment banker, is married
with a baby son. One daughter is a vet, the other an English
teacher. The Keys are a Christian family.
Rob was elected MP for Salisbury in 1983. Margaret Thatcher appointed
him an Environment Minister in 1990. Under John Major, Rob served
as Minister for National Heritage and for Transport. Since 1997
he has been a Shadow Minister for Defence, Energy, and International
Development. In 2004 Michael Howard appointed him Shadow Minister
for Science.
He has served on House Select Committees on Education, Health,
Defence and currently Science and Technology. He is Chairman
of the Information Select Committee.
Rob is a Council Member of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust
and serves on the Board of Wessex Archaeology. Singing has always
been important to him. He was a tenor with the Academy of St.Martin-in-the-Fields
and the Monteverdi Choir. He also enjoys cooking and the countryside.
He belongs to Plantlife International, The Wessex Wildlife Trust
and the British Lichen Society and is President of the Salisbury
Plain Branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
